What a Web Shop Must Do Before Launch

A web shop is the path from a product on a screen to a paid order in an inbox. If the “Buy” button opens chat, Instagram, or a PDF, you still have a brochure. That can be the right first slice. It is not a shop, and it should not be priced as one.
CodeLoop Studio in Sarajevo builds shops when checkout has to survive a phone, a delivery cost, and a stock change on Saturday. The commercial brief is ecommerce website development. This article is the line we draw before anyone opens Figma: shop, site, or logged-in app.
The minimum path that deserves the word shop
We will not call it a web shop until a guest can pick a product with variants, keep a cart on a phone, see delivery cost before they pay, finish payment or cash on delivery you actually support, get a confirmation email, and an owner can change a price without us. Miss one of those and you still have a marketing site with extra screens.
Website development is findability and an enquiry. A custom app is login, roles, and work the team does every day. Mixing the three into one quote is how month two becomes a hostage list. Say which product you are buying in week one.
When a full shop is the wrong first build
One SKU, one test. A landing and a payment link is cheaper than a catalogue, zones, and an admin. We say that on the first call. Prove demand, then grow the cart.
Prices live behind a login. A B2B price book is a portal, not a public cart. Scope accounts and roles separately so checkout does not pretend to be an ERP.
Instagram is still the store. Keep it until you need owned customer data and a second order that does not depend on an algorithm. A shop is for when chat cannot keep up.
Stock lives in someone’s head. A theme will not invent inventory. Either you import a list we can trust, or we build a smaller catalogue you can actually run.
What owners actually break after launch
Themes look finished until the first discount, the first sold-out variant, and the first courier who only covers three municipalities. The shop that lasts is the one where the owner can hide a SKU, change a shipping row, and see an unpaid cash-on-delivery order without a ticket to the studio.
That is also why we freeze payment and parcel rules before the palette. Cards, cash on delivery, pickup, and zone tables are the product. Colour is not. How we run that freeze is how we build a web shop.
Proof without a fake conversion rate
DigitalPlay is a shop we built: catalogue, checkout, and an admin the owner runs. We do not publish invented GMV. You get a written estimate after we see SKU count and how money moves today — within 24 hours of a usable brief.
City-specific checkout is a different brief: a web shop for Belgrade teams and a web shop for Zagreb teams. Neither is an office we staff. Send the list you actually sell via contact or the online estimate.
