# iOS Dates and Timezones: Stop the Clock From Travelling on Its Own

Most “the date jumped” bugs are timezone and calendar handling, not a time machine. Freeze how you store instants before the first TestFlight.

Most “the date jumped” bugs on iOS are timezones, calendars, and storing a local clock as if it were an instant. The phone did not travel through time. The formatter did.

## Store instants, display zones

A booking, a measurement, a “read today” tick: decide whether the event is a moment in the universe or a civil date in the user’s calendar. Mixing them is how a flight to another country “skips” a streak, or how a hotel night lands on the wrong day. We freeze that in discovery, not in a hotfix after TestFlight.

## What we freeze

* **ISO instants on the wire.** Servers speak UTC. Clients format. A “date only” field is explicit, not a midnight timestamp hoping for the best.
* **DST and travel.** If your users fly, we test a timezone change. If they never leave one city, we still do not parse strings with `DateFormatter` and hope.
* **Calendars you actually support.** Gregorian for most product work. We will not pretend we shipped every calendar Apple lists unless the brief says so.

## When this is not the first ticket
